North Bay Multimedia Association (NBMA)
The North Bay Multimedia Association (NBMA) is a professional development association of people working in, or who simply have an interest in, the multimedia industry. Its mission is to promote the growth of the industry in the San Francisco North Bay region and to promote the use of multimedia tools and online learning in the education of tomorrow's work force. The NBMA community ranges from award-winning professionals to people just starting out in the industry, from individuals to very large corporations.
NBMA educates the community through monthly general meetings that keep members apprised of what is happening in the industry. Topics cover four broad categories: Content Development, Software Tools, Infrastructure, and the Industry Environment (social issues, business issues and the like). The organization also hosts six Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that provide education on areas more specific to members' particular profession or interest: Entrepreneurs' SIG; Internet Developers' SIG; Art, Sound & Film SIG; Training & Education SIG; Game Developers' SIG; and the JobConnections SIG. For an example of a SIG meeting, see the meeting notes from the Training & Education SIG's panel discussion on color, co-hosted with San Francisco SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter, and held at the Exploratorium.
Each June, NBMA sponsors its annual "Best of the North Bay" competition and exposition. This event, which is open to students from the North Bay Counties, showcases the cutting-edge work of new media artists. Year after year, the students impress the judges and the public with the quality and professionalism of their work.
Visit the NBMA Website and find out how the organization sprouted from a HyperCard class at Sir Francis Drake High School.
