I visited the Business Magnet Program at Santa Teresa High School in San Jose. The team (Diana Britton-Keller, Linda Sparling, and Jodi Edwards) work together to integrate art, business and English through career-oriented, desktop publishing projects. These projects blur the lines between desktop publishing and multimedia as students explore the relations between text, graphics, and other elements in their design process. Projects are research-based, and particularly strong in community-based research (e.g.: The Local Color project, in which students investigate and report on aspects of the local community). Students also complete an industry-based research paper, which can inform their plans for education. The Program is built around a Total Quality Learning model that relates basic scholastic skills and employability skills, and that supports academic and applied learning. A "Product Rubric" aligns Santa Teresa's ESLRs with criteria typically used by the industry. For more information, contact Linda Sparling, Santa Teresa HS: Ralph Manak |
