I visited Joe Doyle and Katherine Aoki at Vista Community College in Berkeley. At Vista, students can earn an A.A. degree or a Level 1 or Level 2 Certificate in Multimedia. Vista emphasizes the relation between aesthetics and skills in digital imaging, with particular attention to creative content and artistry. Skills are enhanced by technology rather than relying on technology. Students learn about the production process in different forms of media, through team projects that involve writing and critical analysis of their work. The curriculum stresses the importance of basic arts skills, such as figure drawing as related to 2-D and 3-D animation. Vista is developing a Web strand that will include a good dose of project management. Hanging on the walls around the offices are students' digital images of ads for real and imaginary products and services. These demonstrate technical and artistic proficiency while also showing that the students learn about the subjects of their work. Related Links Ralph Manak |
